Plan the Drive

Idyllwild is an easy day trip from much of Southern California — but the mountain roads deserve respect in winter. Here's how to get here.

The Routes

Three ways up the mountain

Idyllwild sits in the San Jacinto Mountains, reachable by a few scenic mountain highways. All of them climb and wind, so plan for a slower drive than the mileage suggests — especially in winter weather. Choose your route based on where you're coming from and current conditions.

Main routes

From the North

Highway 243 (Banning)

From I-10 at Banning, the most direct approach. Steep and winding with switchbacks — more challenging in ice and snow.

From the West

Highway 74 (Hemet)

From Hemet, often the preferred winter route — generally lower and less steep than Highway 243.

From the Desert

Highway 74 (Palm Desert)

The Palms-to-Pines scenic route climbs from the desert; beautiful, but long and winding.

In heavy snow, many drivers favor the Hemet approach for its gentler grade. Whatever you choose, confirm it's open and check chain controls first.
