The Snow Season
December through March, give or take
Thanks to its elevation of roughly 5,400 feet, Idyllwild sees snow most winters — but it comes with the storms rather than blanketing the ground all season long. The snow season generally runs from December into March, with the heaviest snow often arriving late. Locals sometimes call it "March Madness," when spring storms can drop some of the biggest snowfalls of the year on the San Jacintos.
Because it's Southern California, snow can melt quickly between storms, especially on sunny slopes. The best time to catch fresh snow is in the day or two right after a storm passes — which is exactly why checking the forecast and road conditions matters so much.
What affects the snow
Elevation
Higher = More
Pine Cove and higher elevations tend to hold snow longer than lower spots.
Timing
Right After Storms
Fresh snow is best in the first day or two before sun and traffic take their toll.
Variability
Year to Year
Some winters are generous; others are lean. Snowfall is never guaranteed.
