Come Prepared
What to bring for a day in the snow
Coming up from the warm valleys, it's easy to underestimate just how cold and wet a snow day can get. A little packing goes a long way toward keeping everyone comfortable and happy. Here's a checklist to get you started — plus the all-important reminder to carry tire chains for the drive.
- Tire chains (and gloves to install them)
- Warm, waterproof jacket and pants
- Waterproof boots and extra socks
- Hats, gloves and layers
- A sled or snow toys
- Water, snacks and a thermos
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- A small shovel and towels
Dress in layers
Base
Stay Dry
Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat off your skin.
Mid
Stay Warm
Add an insulating layer like fleece or a sweater for warmth.
Outer
Stay Protected
Top with a waterproof, windproof shell — snow is wet, and so are you after a few sled runs.
Bring spare clothes to change into for the drive home. Cold, wet kids (and adults) are no fun on a winding mountain road.
Play Smart
Safety & etiquette
Choose a sledding slope that's clear of trees, rocks and roads, and never sled toward a street or parking lot. Keep an eye on little ones, take breaks to warm up, and watch for signs of cold. Just as important: leave the mountain better than you found it. Pack out all your trash, don't block driveways or private property, and respect the local community that calls Idyllwild home year-round.

Make the most of your day
With the right gear and a safe spot picked out, you're set for a great time. Don't forget to check road conditions and see things to do while you're in town.
