Are chains required in Idyllwild today?

Use the current Caltrans report for your route. A chain restriction applies to the road segment and vehicles described in that report; it can change before you arrive.

What R1, R2 and R3 mean

Caltrans uses these levels for chain controls. Follow the signs and instructions at the checkpoint even if an earlier online report showed something different.

Fit chains unless the vehicle qualifies for the exception: a passenger vehicle or light-duty truck under 6,000 pounds gross weight, with snow tires on at least two drive wheels. Those exempt vehicles must still carry chains.

Fit chains or traction devices unless you have 4WD or AWD with snow-tread tires on all four wheels. Those vehicles must still carry traction devices in the control area.

Every vehicle must use chains or traction devices. There is no AWD or 4WD exception.

Does AWD mean I can leave chains at home?

No. Under R2, the tire and drivetrain exception still requires carrying traction devices. Under R3, AWD must use them too. Roads may close during severe weather, regardless of what equipment you have.

Choosing your route

Highway 243 or Highway 74?

Check Highway 243 along the approach to Idyllwild. Read the locations in the report rather than treating a restriction anywhere on the route as a description of the whole highway.

From the Highway 74 approach

Check both Highway 74 and Highway 243: they meet at Mountain Center, south of Idyllwild. A clear report for one does not clear the other.

Before entering a controlled section

Have the right traction devices ready and use a designated, safe place to fit them, clear of traffic. Allow more time and space for braking. Pack warm clothing, water and food in case of delays, and keep enough fuel for the trip and a possible detour.
