Check First, Drive Second
Always check before you go
Mountain road conditions can change within hours during a storm. Before you leave home, check the latest chain controls, closures and weather. The best official tools are Caltrans QuickMap (real-time chain controls, closures and even plow locations), the California Highway Information line at 1-800-427-7623, and the Caltrans road information page for Highway 243. Re-check before you head back down, too.
Understanding chain requirements
During winter weather, Caltrans posts one of three chain control levels. Knowing them ahead of time helps you prepare:
Carry chains that fit your vehicle whenever you drive up in winter, and know how to put them on. In heavy snow, Caltrans may close the highway entirely until it's safe.
Quick winter-driving reminders

- Check QuickMap before you leave
- Keep your gas tank full
