Where to Go

After a good storm, the Idyllwild area offers plenty of spots to play in the snow. Here's where to go — and the turnouts to avoid.

Finding the Snow

Snow play around the mountain

Idyllwild itself sits at about 5,400 feet, and the surrounding communities of Pine Cove and Mountain Center are at similar or higher elevations — so when snow falls, it tends to blanket the whole area. The best snow play is usually found in spots with safe, legal parking and a bit of open space, ideally with restrooms nearby. Conditions change quickly after a storm, so flexibility (and patience with parking) helps.

Good areas to look

In Town

Idyllwild

The town and nearby county park areas can offer space for snow play, with restrooms and parking close by.

Higher Up

Pine Cove

Just above Idyllwild, Pine Cove often holds snow well thanks to its higher elevation.

Junction

Mountain Center

Where Highways 243 and 74 meet, with open areas nearby when there's snow.

Local and county parks in the area sometimes provide the most reliable parking, restrooms and room to play. Always follow posted signs and park only in legal spaces.
